Smart Engagement-Based Segments

Letterhead now offers automated audience segmentation based on subscriber engagement. These segments allow users to target audience members based on their interaction levels over 30, 60, and 90 days. This feature enhances engagement by enabling newsletter senders to focus on active subscribers while re-engaging inactive ones.


These are dynamic, pre-built segments that help you:

  • Send content to your most engaged subscribers

  • Re-engage inactive readers

  • Improve deliverability and campaign performance


Go to your Audience > Segments tab. Smart Segments are automatically created and labeled.

Subscribers who have opened at least one newsletter within the specified time frame:

  • 30 days

  • 60 days

  • 90 days

Subscribers who have clicked on any link in a newsletter within the specified time frame:

  • 30 days

  • 60 days

  • 90 days

Subscribers who have neither opened nor clicked any link within a newsletter within the specified time frame:

  • 30 days

  • 60 days

    Accessing Segments

  • Letterhead automatically generates and displays these segments on the Segments Page.

  • These segments behave like any other segment and can be used to send newsletters to a specific group of audience members.

  • In the Composer, the default segments (e.g., “Active openers (30 days)”) appear as an option in the Audience dropdown when scheduling a newsletter.

  • These default segments cannot be edited or deleted

  • Improved Targeting: You can send newsletters to subscribers who are actively engaging with content.

  • Re-engagement Strategies: You can identify and target inactive subscribers with special campaigns.

  • Automated Audience Management: Segments are dynamically updated based on engagement, reducing manual list management.


    Daily. Subscribers automatically move in or out of segments based on their recent engagement.

    Not at this time. These Smart Segments use preset engagement windows. However, you can create custom segments with similar rules manually.
