Automation triggers overview

Edit in CMS

Automation triggers define when an automation series runs. Understanding each trigger type helps you build series that respond to the right subscriber actions and lifecycle events.

Fires when: A subscriber’s status changes (e.g., subscribed → unsubscribed, or imported → active).

Use case: Send a welcome series when someone subscribes, or a re-engagement offer when they unsubscribe.

Fires when: A subscriber receives a specific tag in your audience.

Use case: Target subscribers who purchased a product or attended an event. Send relevant follow-up content to those tagged groups.

Fires when: A new item is added to a specific curation or collection.

Use case: Automatically send curated content to subscribers in a weekly digest or as individual notifications.

Fires when: A subscriber opens a newsletter from your account.

Use case: Trigger a follow-up message to engaged subscribers or offer content related to what they just read.

Fires when: A subscriber clicks a link in your newsletter.

Use case: Send related content, upsell, or nurture flows based on which link they clicked.

Fires on: A specific date or recurring date (e.g., annually, monthly, weekly).

Use case: Send birthday messages, seasonal offers, or anniversary notifications to subscribers.

Fires when: A subscriber has not opened your newsletter in a specified number of sends (customizable).

Use case: Win back inactive subscribers with a special offer or ask if they want to stay subscribed. See Build a re-engagement series.
