Build a re-engagement series

A re-engagement series automatically sends targeted messages to subscribers who have become disengaged (not opened newsletters in a certain number of sends). Use it to win them back with special offers, new content, or a final ask before removing them from your list.

  1. Go to Automations and click + New Series or Create Automation.
  2. Enter a descriptive name (e.g., “Q2 Re-engagement”, “Win back inactive readers”).
  3. Under Trigger, select Re-engagement or Subscriber Inactive.
  4. Configure the trigger:
    • Set the threshold (e.g., “Haven’t opened in 5 sends” or “Inactive for 30 days”).
    • (Optional) Exclude specific subscriber segments or tags.
  1. Click Add Step or Add Message to create the first email in the series.
  2. Select or create a template for your re-engagement message.
  3. Personalize the content:
    • Acknowledge the lapsed engagement (“We miss you!”)
    • Offer value (e.g., a discount, new content, curated articles)
    • Include a clear call-to-action
  4. Set the timing:
    • Immediately upon trigger, or
    • Delay X days before sending the first message
  5. (Optional) Add follow-up steps:
    • Click Add Another Step to create a second message
    • Set the delay between steps (e.g., 3 days later, 7 days later)
    • Typical series: 2–3 messages over 1–2 weeks
  1. Review all steps and timing in the summary view.
  2. Click Preview to see how messages will look to subscribers.
  3. Click Activate to start the series.
  4. Subscribers matching the re-engagement criteria will automatically begin receiving messages.

After activating, check the series health and performance:
