Private newsletters and Hide from archive

On the Emails page under All Letters, each edition has a Hide from archive toggle that controls whether it appears on your public archive page.

Newsletters are visible in the archive by default. Toggle Hide from archive to remove an edition from the archive page — this works even after the newsletter has been published, in which case it disappears from the archive immediately.

This is handy when you’ve replaced a published edition with a corrected copy and want only the updated version showing publicly.

Long-time Letterhead users: in earlier versions of the composer, this feature was labeled Public and worked in the opposite direction — toggling right made an edition public, and the default was private.

How hidden and public newsletters differ

Both hidden and public newsletters are published and sent to your audience exactly the same way. The only difference is visibility on the Archive page:

• Public newsletters appear on the archive page for anyone to see.
• Hidden newsletters are excluded from the archive page.

In your newsletter list, hidden editions are marked with an icon next to the title, so you can tell at a glance which is which. Your public archive page itself is turned on or off per channel — see Managing Your Channel Settings.

Readers can still open a private newsletter in their browser

When you send a private newsletter, the people who received it can click View in browser and read that exact edition on the web, just as they can with a public newsletter. The link opens straight from their email.

Opening a private edition in the browser doesn’t make it public:

• It stays unlisted in your public archive and out of search results.
• It opens only for someone who has the unique link from their own copy of the email. A guessed or numbered web address still reveals nothing.

So the reader who received the email can always get back to a clean, readable copy, while everyone else still sees nothing. The privacy model itself is unchanged — only the ability to view a received edition in a browser was added.

Test sends work too

When you send yourself a test of a private newsletter, its View in browser link opens the same way — showing the edition with a banner that takes you back to the composer to keep editing.

Transactional emails and manual one-off sends are unchanged and don’t include browser links.
