Import contacts (CSV)
Edit in CMSImport a CSV file of contacts into Letterhead using the guided importer, which maps your columns to Letterhead contact fields, validates data, and handles duplicates.
Prepare your CSV
Section titled “Prepare your CSV”Ensure your CSV file includes:
- Email (required): valid email addresses.
- Name (optional): first name, last name, or full name.
- Any custom fields you’ve set up in Letterhead.
Example rows:

Section titled “Start the import”- Go to Audience or Contacts (TODO: confirm exact entry point).
- Click Import or Add Contacts > Import CSV.
- Select your CSV file or drag it into the upload area.
Map your columns
Section titled “Map your columns”The importer displays your CSV columns and prompts you to map each to a Letterhead field:
- For each column (e.g.,
first_name), select the corresponding Letterhead field from the dropdown. - Mark required fields like Email if not auto-detected.
- Custom fields appear in the list if already created in Letterhead; unmapped custom columns are skipped.
- Click Next or Continue.
Review and validate
Section titled “Review and validate”- The importer shows a preview of rows and highlights any validation errors (e.g., missing email, invalid format).
- Review the data and fix errors in your CSV if needed, or proceed if errors are acceptable.
- Choose how to handle duplicates: Skip (ignore existing emails), Merge (update existing), or Create Duplicate (TODO: confirm exact options).
- Click Confirm or Import.
Complete the import
Section titled “Complete the import”- The import runs asynchronously.
- You’ll receive a notification or email when complete with a summary (contacts added, skipped, failed).
- New contacts appear in your Audience immediately.
Next steps
Section titled “Next steps”- Manage custom fields to store additional contact data.
- Create segments to organize and target specific audiences.
- Export your audience to back up or migrate contacts.
