What is a custom field, and why should I use it?

The purpose of the custom field is to store specific information about your subscribers or audience members.  The idea behind this feature is not only for our users to create segments based on this information, like you do now with tags, but also to use this information for specific merge tags or automations in the future.

You can now create a custom field to store a subscriber’s birthday, for example, or any information you think is valuable for you to know about your audience. 

Note: Can I import custom fields via CSV?
Yes. If your CSV includes columns matching existing custom field names in your account, Letterhead will populate those values automatically during import. You cannot create new custom fields via import.
